Back in January, Stephanie from Modern Sewciety invited me to join Modern Sewcialites, a membership group for sewists. Every month there is a theme, and within that month there is a new block pattern for a BOM (Block of the Month quilt), a podcast, a recipe, and all sorts of other amazing things! It’s been a while since I took part in a BOM, and I really liked the way this quilt will tell my story
So, I thought I’d gather together my blocks for the first three months, and talk a little about my plan for this BOM quilt.
I have a love of pretty fabrics (you may have noticed!) – and I have a nice little stash of tiny florals, polka dots, gingham, etc. I had a little think of how I wanted to make this BOM quilt, and decided that it would be scrappy. I’m going to make each block from a favourite fabric line by a favourite designer! And I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will look gorgeous at the end!
The theme for January was “Creative Power Word for the year”. So this block was meant to be my word for the year, but I have real trouble thinking of just one word! I’ve tried to do it in previous years, I really like the idea of it, but I just can’t do it! So, instead of stressing about a word, I decided to just go with “2018” – a very visual reminder that I made this quilt in 2018 🙂 I used the pretty Sew Cherry 2 fabrics by Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet. Stephanie wants us to make this quilt our own, with our own spin on it, so I was pretty sure she’d be happy with my “word”!
I used Vliesofix to attach my numbers to the background fabric and then just sewed around each number a couple of times.
The February theme was “What do you love about being creative?” and Stephanie chose the perfect block – a heart, of course!! My first block was made using a couple of the dainty prints from Little Dolly by Elea Lutz.
It was such a quick block to make, that I got to thinking! I had a friend who was due to have a baby girl very soon, and these Little Dolly fabrics are perfect for a baby girl quilt. So I made 9 of the 12″ blocks using a fat 8th bundle I had in my stash. I haven’t gifted it yet, so you just get a peek!
I went crazy and did two different kinds of free motion quilting – long, loopy figure 8’s inside the hearts and a stipple in the background. I was inspired by Christa Watson of Christa Quilts – she showed in an Instagram post how to do that without having to do all of one kind first and then the other kind. Very cool!!
Of course, I then had to make another heart block so that I had one for my quilt! I chose the red tiny floral from First Romance by Kristyne Czepuryk of Pretty by Hand. Isn’t it a perfect heart?
My last block for this quarter is the house block for March. The theme was “Creative homes”. I love a house block, and this one is another quick and easy make! I decided to use the leftover fabric from my turn on the La Conner blog tour. This pretty fabric, in muted colours of red, green, pink and brown, was designed by the very clever Jera Brandvig, from Quilting in the Rain.
How perfect is it in this house block? I thought that red check looked a little like roof tiles, and my house has sweet flowers all over the walls and door, with some very tiny little gold highlights! And, of course, flowers in the garden out the front!
I’m looking forward to having this quilt made and remembering all my favourite fabric lines as I snuggle under it.
